Basement Music

Basement Music was North Carolina Wesleyan College WESQ radio's first hip-hop show in the 1990s.

According to Wikipedia, WESQ launched in the early 1990s and:

... offered a variety of music that included country and R&B. The city of Rocky Mount bought the station and operated it with the on-air name "Down East Public Radio." It was renamed WRQM in 1996. The station floundered for most of its existence, as there were just barely enough listeners in that area of the market for the station to be viable on its own. This caused a chronic shortage of financial support even after the city of Rocky Mount bought the station. In March 1999, it began airing portions of WUNC's schedule. It became a full repeater of WUNC that October.

WESQ's phone number was 985-JAMM.

Basement Music was hosted by The DJ Without a Name and had its initial short run during the summer of 1993. The DJ Without a Name then started college in Chapel Hill, but in 1994 relaunched the show on WESQ, driving the 80 miles to Rocky Mount to host the show from 1-6am. A co-host, justBLACK, eventually joined the show and DJ Mike Nice of Durham’s WXDU contributed mixes. The DJ Without a Name would occasionally pop up on WXDU with his show, as well.

In September of 1994, the station cut the show to two hours. By March of 1995, the station had cancelled the show. The DJ Without a Name describes the show's unceremonious end:

March 24, 1995 was our final episode, and we only got to do that by pre-recording it (in a production room at WXDU in Durham, in fact) and submitting it to the Program Director to review beforehand. That’s because the reason we got the axe was that we crossed the line from “safe harbor” indecency into “obscenity.” From the start, because the show was after 10:00 PM, we were allowed the luxury of letting uncensored records play, as part of the FCC’s “safe harbor” provisions — after a certain hour, you can let the curse words fly. I never cursed, but I let the records do so freely. Where I screwed up was when I once let a caller freestyle live on the air, and he started saying some rather sexually explicit stuff.
